Methodology

The carmannews methodology page documents the tools, datasets, and review processes behind the kinds of stories where numbers do the work. Different beats use different methods; this page is updated when our methods change.

Data sources

For company financials, we use primary SEC filings (EDGAR). For health policy, the CDC, NIH, and the original peer-reviewed papers. For consumer technology, manufacturer technical specs plus our own bench testing. For housing data, primary MLS feeds and HUD reports.

Review

Every data-heavy carmannews story is reviewed by a second editor before publication, and the underlying spreadsheet is retained for one year so a reader who challenges a number can audit our work.
